Are you looking for a family medicine doctor in Katy, TX? Learn more about Dr. Jacinta Anyaoku.
Dr. Anyaoku was born in Philadelphia, PA, raised on the east coast, and grew up in Ohio before calling Texas home. Dr. Anyaoku has been interested in medicine since an early age, often problem-solving medical issues, researching, and developing solutions to ailments.
With interest in skin solutions, this real-life Doc McStuffins began her medical studies intending to become a dermatologist. However, she fell in love with family medicine and the ability to treat the whole patient during her med school rotations. She switched gears and decided to become a family physician, but planned to still incorporate dermatology into her practice as much as possible.
In 2014, as a single woman, Dr. Anyaoku moved to Houston and as fate would have it, met her husband the weekend of her move! The two were married in 2016 and are proud parents to 2 boys born in 2018 and 2020. As a young medical doctor, Dr. Anyaoku took the traditional route and worked as an employed physician right out of residency. Upon moving to Houston a year after graduating, she joined Memorial Hermann Medical Group.
After working with Memorial Hermann for over six years, the wife and mom of 2 grew weary attempting to find the balance of motherhood, her passion for caring for patients, and working long hours at the practice. Tired of being overworked and not having time for her children (or herself), compounded with the covid pandemic, this doctor mom started taking things into her hands by creating her practice. In August of 2021, she took a leap of faith and opened
What is Direct Primary Care?
Hibiscus Health and Wellness follows a direct primary care model. Dr. Anyaoku describes Direct Primary Care as a model that does not accept insurance but charges a monthly membership fee covering the majority of your primary care needs.
In traditional healthcare practices that accept insurance, there is a lot of pressure on doctors to be profitable. Physicians must code visits in certain ways to get paid, see a large number of patients per day, and basically practice under the direction of insurance companies and healthcare systems whose main goal is to make money. The benefits to the physician of operating under a direct primary care structure include the decreased patient panel, independence in how to practice medicine, and more flexibility in the practice. For the patients, the benefits are numerous. You have more time with your physician, increased access to your doctor by phone, text, email, more readily available appointments, and often times you can save money by your doctor’s access to cash pay pricing for labs, imaging, as well as included in office procedures.
Virtual visits are a big part of Dr. Anyaoku’s practice and can be performed when appropriate. Patients can text the practice through a secure app, and after a quick discussion or video visit, the doctor can order labs or medication, all without missing work or life!
To join HIbiscus Health and Wellness as a direct primary care patient, the fee is $99 per month, for a couple there is an additional $80, and for children or additional adult members, they are $50 each. If someone wants a pediatric only membership, that child is $75 per month. There is a one-time enrollment fee as well.
Direct Primary Care also works well for small businesses to offer as a health benefit to their employees. The employee plan is $80 per employee per month.
Medical Spa
In August 2022, the practice began offering aesthetic services. These services are open to everyone and you do not need to have a membership to the practice. Practice members receive a 10% discount on all aesthetic services.
The Hibiscus Medical Spa offers injectables such as botox, fillers, chemical peels, Kybella, micro-needling, and PRF. They offer the new AviClear laser for acne. They also have a weight loss program that includes treatment with injectable medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy, or Mounjaro along with tools to help with lasting weight loss – meal plans, exercise plans, frequent check-ins.
Here are a few questions from our interview:
Dr. Anyaoku’s approach to medicine:
I like to take a more personalized approach to medicine. On our first visit, we will sit and talk. I want to learn about you, your medical history, and how you’ve responded to previous treatments.
Some patients prefer a more natural treatment approach and are into alternative methods. I’m ok with that. As a physician, we are trained in traditional medicine, but we can also be open to other treatments. During my residency, I was trained in something called Integrative Medicine. This allows us to incorporate other types of treatment along with traditional medicine. I support patients wanting to try an alternative approach as long as: 1. there is evidence that shows it’s safe, 2. research has documented possible effectiveness, and 3. your condition is currently not poorly controlled/life-threatening.
When treating patients, I like to look at the whole patient. This means I’m also taking into consideration their home situations, support systems, and mental health status when doing an evaluation.
What are your feelings on vaccines?
Hibiscus Health and Wellness sees both vaccinated and unvaccinated patients. It doesn’t make sense to turn someone away because they choose not to vaccinate. As physicians, we can provide knowledge and guidance, but it is ultimately the patient’s/parent’s decision. I will definitely let you know which vaccines are recommended, however you are not required to be vaccinated to be a patient at the practice.
